Floor Machines, Safety And You.

It sounds like the title to a 1980’s job orientation video, but we hear so many stories of floor machines and heavy equipment not being used properly, we thought we could offer a few tips and reminders.

General Safety

• First off, anyone who operates a floor machine should be properly trained to do so. Even if they’re just moving it from one spot another..

How not to use a Floor Machine

• All personnel in the immediate work area must wear safety glasses with side shields whenever the machine is in operation. Protective clothing is also recommended –  Long sleeve shirts and safety shoes should be worn and avoid wearing loose clothing.

• Never attempt to service or replace attachments while the machine is running or connected to a power source.

• Do not operate a floor machine in the rain or in areas where liquids could enter the electrical components of the machine.

• Keep the power cords away from the revolving heads or sharp tooling to avoid damage.

• When working on the machine or changing tools unplug, unplug, unplug!

• Make sure your machine is properly grounded. Occasionally check the cord for damage and wear. Unplug by the plug, not the cord.

• Most manufacturers recommend only using the supplies power cord, and not an extra extension cord.

• Be aware of your surroundings. Do not use around flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline or use in areas where they may be present.

Fire hazard! Do not leave sawdust in the filter bag when the machine is not in use. See – Sawdust Explosion
Floor sanding can result in an explosive mixture of fine dust and air. Use a floor sanding machine only in a well ventilated area.

Machine Maintenance

• Unplug the machine.

• After each use, wipe off machine with a clean cloth.

• Empty the vacuum you are using in accordance with specific manufacturer’s safety & operation instructions.

• Check for loose parts and fasteners.

• Check the power cord for any breaks in the wire. Breaks will most likely occur near the plug or switch. Repair or replace any breaks immediately.

These are general safety precautions and tips, as with any machinery always read the owners manual. Be sure to practice and teach safety tips to anyone at your job site.
